Written by Thomas Sherrod

“Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered” (Romans 8:26 NKJV).

An old high school friend stopped by the house after my older brother died. Thirty-five years later, I still remember his visit. He walked through the front door, hugged me, and simply groaned. Somehow, I understood the message of those guttural sounds. His sighs seemed to say, “I loved him, too.” I knew I was not alone in my grief.

The minister gathered the family for prayer. We held hands in a circle. I do not remember a word that was said. Sometimes words are inadequate. They do not reveal the emotion we long to verbalize. Words may even get in the way. How wonderful it is to know God’s loving Spirit intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. God intervenes for us and bridges the gap between Him and us. The Holy Spirit acts as a translator for our innermost thoughts and feelings.

Living with a cancer diagnosis can create overwhelming thoughts and feelings that are difficult for you and others to adequately express. Even another cancer survivor may be unable to relate. Their experience may have been different. At times, well-meaning friends and family struggle to listen. They seem preoccupied with themselves. They may offer simple solutions to complicated decisions and confusing feelings. This scripture assures you God knows every aspect of your unique situation.

I have made the mistake of asking someone, “Why are you crying?” only to be told, “I don’t know.” They just wanted to cry. Their tears spoke for themselves with sighs too deep for words. You can take comfort in knowing your groanings are understood and shared by a compassionate and merciful God.

My fourteen-month-old grandson may not understand everything I say, but I am convinced he knows I love him. You may wonder if God hears, cares, or understands your plight. I am convinced God understands and walks with you through your deepest valley and your darkest night. Satan, the author of lies, would have you believe you are alone. But God, the giver of life, would have you know His Spirit dwells within you and is an unbreakable cord between Himself and you.

Pray: Lord, You are a friend who sticks closer than a brother. You are a friend who knows my every weakness. You are a Savior who feels my deepest woe. May You hold me close to Your loving heart as I walk this difficult road. Amen.

Your Turn: Quietly close your eyes and feel your heart beating. Hear your lungs inhaling and exhaling. Now, let the Lord’s Spirit assure your spirit of His presence, comfort, and love.
