“Truly, my soul silently waits for God” (Psalm 62:1 NKJV).
In the midst of our busy lives, the assertion to wait silently for God sounds ridiculous. A surgeon friend says that when someone asks how his business is doing, he always says, “I’m covered up!” He says, “No one wants a surgeon looking for work.” His statement is somewhat funny, but also an unfortunate and even sad reminder that our culture places a high value on “being busy” and having a full schedule. Cancer has a way of pulling our focus past our schedules so we might reorder our priorities. Things that once seemed of highest importance suddenly take a back seat. Our lives become focused on survival, getting through the next treatment, and staying close to the people who mean the most to us.
Psalm 62 says, “My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him. He only is my Rock and my salvation” (Psalm 62:5-6 NKJV). The writer is zeroed in on God alone. Why? He goes on to explain that only God is his rock and salvation. No matter what else is going on in his life, or how many needs and dangers are pressing in on him, he believes that God is the only One he must look to for his strength and his deliverance.
May God reclaim our hearts and minds with His presence. May His presence give us security in a world that at times feels like shifting sand. During a cancer journey, we can easily feel weak or vulnerable when we are waiting. Yet, when we are waiting with God, we are resting in His strength and power. The psalmist reminds us of this, saying, “power belongs to God” (Psalm 62:11 NKJV). May God give us His strength to wait silently for Him, and fill us with His presence, His security, and His power as we travel through the hardships of cancer. May God’s faithfulness be our rock and our salvation no matter what we may face.
Pray: Father, reclaim my heart and mind with Your presence. Teach me more of what it means to know You are my rock and my salvation, and help me to trust Your presence, power and love for me. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
