You’ve Come a Long Way, October 20

By Thomas Sherrod

Now then, tell my servant David, “This is what the LORD Almighty says: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel” (1 Chronicles 17:7 NIV).

I just had my fiftieth high school reunion. How is that possible? Classmates were asked to submit a brief summary of their lives. It was fascinating to read the stories. One person went to law school, decided it was not for him and started a gardening business. Another, who was quiet and unassuming, became a leader in his community. A life review can be a revealing exercise. We see how God has worked in our lives. And it brings assurance that He will continue His work in us.

In our verse for today, God uses the prophet Nathan to remind King David of his roots. David has risen to the highest office in the land. He lives in ornate surroundings and wields tremendous power. But the Lord wants him to recall where he came from—and, who brought him to where he is. Looking back can keep us humble. It can also instill hope when questions of faith invade our minds. We know what God has done. And we trust He will complete the work He has begun within us. (See Philippians 1:6.)

Cancer presents the opportunity to review your life. You may have wondered, “How am I going to get through this?” Sometimes in the midst of a battle it is hard to have perspective. But it may be healing to reflect upon how far God has brought you. Can you remember long-forgotten trials, or past obstacles that seemed insurmountable to you at the time? Maybe your first oral book report or your first day at a new job were fraught with anxiety. Yet, He brought you through. What seemed overwhelming became a chasm God helped you cross. God took David from herding sheep to being the King of Israel. He can take you through your present situation.

God took Moses from a basket floating in the river to the house of the king. Jeremiah thought he was too young and inexperienced. The list goes on. Matthew was a hated tax collector. Many of the disciples were fishermen. What is your story? How many terrifying challenges has God helped you conquer? May God give you assurance He will carry you through your present trial.

Pray: Lord, remind me how far You have shepherded me. Bring to mind my humble beginnings. Keep my heart close to You. May I rejoice in Your power that can do exceedingly more than I can ever ask or imagine. Amen.

Your Turn: Invite God to accompany you as you review old school annuals or photograph albums. Rejoice in how far God has brought you. Look forward to the next chapter of your life.
