“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure” (Hebrews 6:19a NIV).

In December of 2018, my wife Dominique and I set sail on our first cruise together. We boarded the ship provided by Carnival Cruise Lines in Miami, Florida. The immensity of the ship alone was breath-taking. As we boarded the ship, I couldn’t help but notice the size of the ropes that tethered the ship in place. The ropes looked like giant pretzels braided just right, securing the massive structure to the dock. Awestruck by the sheer size of the ocean liner, I searched for the anchor. Keep in mind the average cruise ship today is twenty percent longer than the Titanic, and twice as high. The average Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship is 325 meters long, 14 decks high, and weighs an estimated 133,000 tons. At the time the Titanic was built, it was considered to be the largest ocean liner ever constructed. However, it was a lightweight in comparison to a Royal Caribbean ship, slightly tipping the scales at a svelte weight of 46,000 tons. Do I have your attention yet?

I finally located the anchor. If the anchor was viewed on its own, it would seem huge. Attached to this huge ship, it didn’t appear as large. Yet, the job of the anchor in the ocean is to hold this incredibly large vessel in place.

Now that I have flooded your brain with all this information, allow the Word of God to secure your restless soul as you battle the ravages of cancer. My restless soul struggled with:

  • The uncertainty of surgery.

  • The uncertainty of the length of my life.

  • My doubts about the skill set of the surgeons.

  • My doubts about the ability of the radiologist to read the scans properly.

There are so many things to buffet our souls in a cancer battle. We desperately need an anchor to keep us from being overcome by the wind and the waves. In today’s verse, we read where we can find an anchor to count on, no matter the storm. Our hope in Jesus is our soul’s anchor, firm and secure.

Do you know this powerful song, “My Soul is Anchored”?

Though the storms keep on raging in my life

And sometimes it’s hard to tell the night from day,

Still that hope that lies within is reassured.

As I keep my eyes upon the distant shore,

I know He'll lead me safely to that blessed place He has prepared.

But if the storms don't cease,

And if the winds keep on blowing in my life,

My soul has been anchored in the Lord.1

Stand on the promise that God will never leave you nor forsake you. He who created the world by speaking it into existence! He who crafted you from the dust of the earth and breathed the breath of life into you. Allow His love to anchor you in place as you weather the storms of your cancer journey. My soul has been anchored in the Lord. How about you?

Pray: Almighty God, anchor us firm and secure in Your Word, Your love, and Your strength, so we may weather the storms of life. Amen.

Your Turn: Let your heart rest in God as you listen to Douglas Miller sing this beautiful Gospel song, “My Soul is Anchored.”
