“God saw the people of Israel—and God knew” (Exodus 2:25 ESV).

The motion picture titled “The Ten Commandments” depicted the trials and tribulations of the children of Israel led by Moses. Moses was stirred up by the Spirit of God to lead a people out of slavery to the land of milk and honey—prosperity. The movie is extensive in length but does a great job of painting a picture of the apparently insurmountable odds of freeing what some estimate to be over one million people from the horrors of slavery. Hopeless proposition? The Israelites’ slavery had lasted for generations upon generations. These one million people knew nothing but slavery.

At the time, it seemed the Hebrew children didn’t know that God heard their prayers. Do you know that in your hopelessness the Lord hears your cries as you battle cancer? It can be harder to remember that God hears your cries on the hard days, or when you wake in the middle of the night covered in heavy thoughts. Surrounded by their battle against slavery, Scripture says the Israelites groaned (see Exodus 2:23). It’s hard to not have times in a cancer battle when we groan. What was God’s response to the Israelites’ groans? What is God’s response to our groans?

Looking at today’s verse, we learn that God saw them, and He knew. What did He know? Did He know how they felt? Did He know how they suffered? Did He know what they wanted and what they desperately needed? Yes. God knew all of this and more. Much more.

Just like the Lord heard the cries of the Hebrew children and freed them from the hopeless bondage of slavery, He will free you from the hopelessness you can feel during your cancer journey. Keep praying. Keep petitioning Him in faith. With each prayer, with each groan, remember God knows.

Pray: Lord, we thank You for Your Word. Thank You for hearing our prayers. Place before us each and every day the comfort of knowing that You see us, and You know. Amen.

Your Turn: Take a moment to think of all the things on your heart you know the Lord knows. Lift up a prayer thanking God for seeing you and knowing.
